Moi University, one of Kenya’s largest public universities, has announced its “indefinite “intil further notice” closure.
The decision was made by university administration in response to ongoing industrial action by the varsity’s staff, and announced on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024.
Students have been instructed to vacate the premises promptly, causing widespread confusion and concern among the university community.
The abrupt closure is expected to significantly disrupt academic schedules and potentially impact graduation timelines for many students.
The statement read:
The University Senate in a Special Meeting held today Thursday 3rd October 2024 resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the 1″ Semester 2024/2025 Academic Year as a consequence of the industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease,”

University officials have not provided a timeline for when normal operations might resume, stating only that the institution will remain closed “indefinitely.”
This uncertainty has left both students and staff in limbo, with many worried about the long-term implications of the shutdown.
Local authorities are reportedly working with university management to address the underlying issues that led to this drastic measure.
The statement read further:
This is, therefore, to announce the closure of the University with immediate effect.
Further, all students are advised as follows:
• All students in all Campuses should vacate the University premises with immediate effect
• All students residing in the University halls of residence should vacate with immediate effect
• All International students are requested to liaise with the Dean of Students for further direction.
Re-opening dates will be communicated in due course.
As the situation develops, stakeholders are calling for clear communication from the university administration and a swift resolution to allow students to return to their studies.
We will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
About Moi University strike
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Moi University found itself embroiled in chaos as lecturers and non-teaching staff took to the streets of Eldoret City in protest.
The demonstrators are demanding the payment of overdue salaries and the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The situation has been escalating for weeks, with over 3,000 university employees initiating a go-slow in August due to frequent salary delays and other workplace grievances.
Staff members have accused the university management of exploitation, citing unexplained third-party deductions from their payslips that do not reflect in their overall balances.
The ongoing strike has had severe repercussions on campus life, with students reportedly forced to live in unsanitary conditions due to the absence of cleaning staff.
As tensions continue to mount, the university administration faces increasing pressure to address the concerns of its workforce and find a resolution to the crisis.
